After 1800s, the world had changed a lot in terms of economy, policies, military and more other places. Also the West started to expand their territory. These expansions overseas started because some new markets and sources of raw materials were needed. Also, in those days, late 1800s, the U.S. faced to some problems with Spanish colonies. Whether US.A should be expanded overseas or not was the problem. However, the war occurred and Spain lost its colonies in America Island. This war was something which was debatable issues. Although, the war with Spanish was not supported by large groups, the small influential one agreed with the acquiring overseas. Albert J. Beveridge and Theodore Roosevelt were two of the supporter people. Except from them, William Graham Sumner disapproved expansions the overseas. In this essay, I try to compare the Theodore Roosevelt and William Graham Sumner from the point of their views. Theodore Roosevelt, who was born in 1858, was the twentieth six president of the U.S. Some people declared him as the most dangerous man of the age. He became a president after Mckingley He was a extremely supporter of expansions overseas. According to him, America has to be sea power. In the Constructing the American Past book, ‘The Strenuous Life’, one of his speeches, become his emblem. William Graham, who was a popular in his age, was a sociology professor. He explained the Social Darwinism. Social Darwinism is a theory that the nation, which can adapt ongoing conditions, can only survive among the other nations. He did not agree with the expansion overseas because he thought that expansion equaled imperialism. Also he opposed to the imperialism because if one country dominated other one, they had difficulties in adapting their traditions.
